How ad-hoc driving work actually runs

A lot of Class 1 and Class 2 bookings on our board are marked ad hoc. That usually means the client has peaks, absence and extra routes, not a blank cheque for any hour of the week.

The arrangement works when a driver names real availability. “Anytime” is hard to plan. “Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings” can be filled. Coventry and the wider Midlands currently have the most of this kind of work.

Rates are agreed before you accept a shift. If a day is cancelled, the branch should say so early enough for you to take something else. If that is not happening, tell your consultant — silence helps nobody.

Some ad-hoc books later become temp-to-perm or full-time patterns. That only follows a run of reliable weeks, not a single good shift.
